As I sat in the stands last Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium getting soaked by steady rain, I again marveled as I watched Deuce Vaughn do his thing. Vaughn ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns in K-State’s 40 to 12 victory over the Missouri Tigers. It was his eighth straight 100-yard rushing game, two shy of Darren Sproles’ K-State record of 10 straight, which he set during the 2002-03 seasons.

It got me thinking about what other K-State records Deuce Vaughn may be close to breaking. I perused the football record book and found that he has a good chance to break MANY K-State records by the time his career is over. Here are some notable K-State rushing records and where Vaughn currently sits in the pecking order. I’ve added some commentary, with the likelihood he will break each record.

Rushing attempts in a season

Collin Klein holds the K-State record for rushing attempts in a season with 317 in 2011. Vaughn has 42 rushing attempts through two games. If he averages 21 carries a game the rest of the regular season and a bowl game, he would have 273 carries on the year. That would rank fourth in K-State history, behind Klein, Darren Sproles, and Daniel Thomas. Considering Vaughn did not play a complete game in the first two games, it’s feasible that he may have a shot at this record.

Rushing attempts in a career

K-State’s career leader in rushing attempts is Darren Sproles, with 815. With 400 carries in his career, Vaughn will jump into the top 10 sometime in the next few games. Assuming he returns next year, this record is within reach for Vaughn.

Consecutive 100-yard rushing games

Vaughn has rushed for 100-yards in eight straight games. The record is ten by Darren Sproles in 2002-2003. Assuming Vaughn gets enough carries against Tulane this Saturday, he could top 100 yards for the ninth straight game and then attempt to tie the record against Oklahoma in Norman the following week.

Consecutive games with a rushing touchdown

Vaughn has had a rushing touchdown in nine consecutive games, the fifth longest in Wildcat history. Colin Klein holds the school record of a rushing touchdown in 12 consecutive games, which, amazingly, he did twice. Once in the 2011 season and again in the 2012 season. He might get this one done.

Career rushing yards

Vaughn is currently eighth in school history in career rushing yards with 2,317. Darren Sproles holds the school record with 4,979 yards. First place will be very hard to reach, but second place is attainable. John Hubert sits in second place with 2,993 yards. Vaughn should take over second place on the all-time list sometime this season.

Rushing touchdowns

Vaughn has 28 rushing touchdowns, tied for 6th in school history. The school record is 56, held by Collin Klein. This record will be tough for Vaughn to break. Darren Sproles is in second place with 45 rushing touchdowns, but even that number will be difficult to reach.

Career all-purpose yards

Vaughn has 3,370 career all-purpose yards, which is seventh in school history. The school record is held by Darren Sproles, with 6,812 yards. This is another record that will be difficult to reach. Tyler Lockett is in second place with 6,586 yards. Third place is within reach for Vaughn, as Aaron Lockett currently holds that spot with 4,023 yards.

Rushing yards in a season

Vaughn is currently fourth on the rushing yards in a season list, rushing for 1,404 yards in 2021. The school record is held by Darren Sproles, with 1,986 yards. Vaughn would have to average 156 yards rushing per game this season (assuming a bowl game appearance) the rest of the way in order to break Sproles’ record.

100-yard rushing games in a season

Vaughn is tied for second on the all-time list with nine 100-yard rushing games in 2021. The record is Darren Sproles with 10. Vaughn may have a good shot at breaking this record.

Yards per carry in a season

The K-State record for yards per carry in a season is held by Darren Sproles, with 6.49 yards per carry in 2003. Vaughn is fourth on the all-time list, averaging 5.97 yards per carry last season. He is averaging 6.5 yards per carry after two games this season. Keep an eye on this one as the season progresses.

Yards per carry in a career

Vaughn is averaging 5.8 yards per carry in his career, which is good for second place on the K-State all-time list. Sproles holds the record with 6.11 yards per carry. It will be interesting to watch this one play out as well.

Career 100-yard rushing games

Vaughn has 14 career 100-yard rushing games, and the K-State record is 24, held by Darren Sproles. I can see Vaughn getting ten more and breaking this record, especially if he returns next season.

If Deuce Vaughn breaks these records or not, he has already proven to be one of the best players in K-State history. It will be a lot of fun watching him rise even further in the K-State record books and to see just how many K-State rushing records he can break by the time his career is over.
