Great Games in K-State Football History – Number 1 – K-State 35 Oklahoma 7, December 6, 2003

I tried to pick one photo that would accurately reflect this game and I chose the photo above showing Darren Sproles outrunning the Oklahoma defense, who appeared just a blur in the background.

This has to go down as the biggest game in K-State history and my proudest moment as a K-State football fan.  My Dad had Chiefs season tickets at the time and season ticket holders got first dibs on the tickets before the season even started.  We thought K-State had a decent chance to play in the championship game, so we bought tickets as soon as they went on sale.  As a result, we had excellent tickets in the lower bowl for this one.

I’ll never forget this game for many reasons.  One reason that from the time we got to our seats there was an obnoxious Oklahoma fan sitting right in front of us.  I’ve encountered a lot of obnoxious fans in my life, but this guy would have to rank number one on the list.  I was 30 at the time this game was played and this guy was in his late 40’s or 50’s.  He started talking trash to us from the moment we sat down.  Saying stuff like OU is the greatest of all time, why did we bother buying tickets to this one since OU was going to win in a blowout, and every negative thing about K-State that you can think of.  I mean the guy just wouldn’t shut up.  He was with a few of his buddies and they were having a grand old time before the game started.

He kept talking crap, especially after OU went ahead 7-0.  Then things changed.  K-State tied it 7-7.  He was still confident, but worried.  Then K-State went up 14-7.  I don’t think I heard a peep out of him the rest of the game.  Thank God.

It is also memorable to me because the entire lower bowl of the stadium stood the entire game like the student section does.  That was odd for a championship game with high priced tickets.

I found a highlight video of the game produced by the Big 12 that I hadn’t seen before:

There is also a full broadcast recording of this one:

Darren Sproles ran for 235 yards in this game on 22 carries.  That’s a 10.7 yards per carry average!  It was an unbelievable performance.

This was K-State’s first Big 12 championship.  I’ll never forget this one.  What are some of your memories of this game?
