From The Couch – The Latest On The K-State Coaching Search – Is It Down To Two?

Rumors are circulating that the search for K-State’s new basketball coach will be wrapped up in the next 24 hours. From what I can tell, it’s down to two candidates, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood and Baylor assistant coach Jerome Tang. There is a lot of smoke around Jerome Tang this morning and absolutely nothing on Underwood. It sounds like we’ll know either way very soon.

JM: The buzz around Jerome Tang has been around for a few days now. He’s not only a candidate at K-State, but a lot of other open jobs. That’s part of the reason that K-State athletic director Gene Taylor would like to get this wrapped up as soon as possible, assuming Tang is interested. It appears that he is…

JM: Interesting tweet this morning by Kellis and it appears that others have heard the same…

JM: I also don’t think it’s done yet, but I think it will be if Brad Underwood says no.

JM: “In the mix” is definitely accurate!

JM: I can’t find anything regarding Underwood other than “behind the scenes” rumors. I thought this thread of “what profession best fits these coaches if they weren’t coaching basketball” was pretty spot on!

JM: Me, too. But is that a good thing or a bad thing? If Gene Taylor and Brad Underwood aren’t on the same page about the way to run a successful program, it may be the reason that Brad ultimately says no. I’m not saying he’s a cheater, but I also think he’s not going to work for an athletic director like John Currie who is one to self-report a receipt found on the floor of a grocery store. It may all be a moot point anyway. We’ll find out soon.

  1. March Madness is always full of suprisses and no one has a crystal ball! This is true for Coaching searches even when ADs hire a searching firm and then still make their own decisions! I get the need but some low level teams in tourney are in NCAA now without using them and on shoestring budgets ask St Pete! Patience K-state crowd we’ve endured a lot!
