From The Couch – Collin Klein Finds Another Quarterback
K-State football received another commitment to the 2022 recruiting class when Desert Edge High School, Arizona quarterback Adryan Lara verbally committed to the Wildcats on Monday. This appears to be quite the get for Collin Klein and Chris Klieman. Lara was formally committed to Washington State and had received offers from Arizona, Fresno State, Iowa State, and Kansas. The more I looked into Lara, the more I found that I really liked. Here’s a sampling.
“Broad-shouldered frame with strong lower half. Strong-armed quarterback with ability to air it out downfield. Shows nice touch on deep throws. Creates a lot of torque with his upper body and can sling ball from different angles. Displays pocket awareness and ability to make pass-rushers miss. Can extend plays while keeping his eyes down field. Delivers the ball on time and leads receivers into space. Stands in the pocket while facing pressure, but at times could make better decisions. Could also continue to refine drop-back footwork while shortening long wind-up motion. Projects as eventual Power Five starter with chance to garner NFL Draft attention.”…Scouting report on 247Sports
JM: They also compared him to pro quarterback AJ McCarron of the Atlanta Falcons. Lara is rated as a three-star talent on most recruiting service websites.
“In 2018, Spencer Rattler, now established at Oklahoma and considered a leading contender for the 2021 Heisman, set the Arizona high school all-time passing record in 11-man football his senior season at Phoenix Pinnacle, finishing with 11,083 yards in his four-year varsity career.
Lara needs 3,190 passing yards next season to break Rattler’s record. He’ll come into the season with 7,894 career passing yards.”…Richard Obert, Arizona Republic, May 6, 2021
JM: Lara finished with 10,652 passing yards, just over 400 yards behind Rattler’s record. This kid can air it out.
“I went out not thinking the best of the surroundings of the campus,” Lara said. “I thought it was going to be grasslands for days with no type of architecture but it wasn’t that at all.
“It looked amazing as I was looking out the window of the plane, I went around Manhattan and fell in love with the place.”…Richard Obert, Arizona Republic, January 24, 2022
JM: It didn’t take long for Lara to fall in love with Manhattan.
“Then Lara took in the Kansas State-Kansas basketball game and was sold on the Big 12 school.
“It was electric,” Lara said. “The people just love the school and that is what totally sold me in the end.”…Richard Obert, Arizona Republic, January 24, 2022
JM: #Family.
“The coaches are all fantastic people and I think it doesn’t get any better anywhere in the whole nation. That just goes to show what kind of people are running the show as it feeds through the whole program. The players seem like they just want to go out and win the day each and every day. I can’t wait to head over there and get to work.”…Richard Obert, Arizona Republic, January 24, 2022
JM: This is good to hear. The atmosphere and environment Chris Klieman is creating will be a draw to other recruits as well. He also threw a “win the dang day” in there.
The quarterback room seems to be pretty crowded, but the competition will be good for all of them. And with the transfer portal being what it is nowadays, it’s always good to have a lot of options.
