Happy New Year! Overall, 2024 was a successful calendar year for K-State Sports. The football team finished 9-4 and won the Rate Bowl, the men’s basketball team made the NIT, the women’s basketball team made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament, and the baseball team made the NCAA super regional round. Does anyone else find it odd that the winners of these bowl games are dubbed “champions?” I guess it is technically true since they won the game, but the word “champion” is usually reserved for a world or conference champion in a sport. A strange feeling overcame me as I watched K-State beat Rutgers 44-41 in the Rate Bowl on Thursday night. I didn’t care whether the team won or lost.
