From The Couch – K-State Women’s Basketball To The Sweet 16

It took overtime to do it, but the K-State women’s basketball team beat the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday, 80 to 79, in the round of 32 of the NCAA tournament to reach their first Sweet 16 since 2002. Temira Poindexter was outstanding, making eight three-pointers, including what ended up being the game winner, and finished the game with 24 points, six rebounds, and six blocked shots. Ayoka Lee added 16 points, and Serena Sundell scored 19 points and had 14 assists in the victory. K-State advanced to play number one seed USC this Saturday at 7:00 PM CST on ESPN.

JM: How is that for a stat line? Doesn’t get much better than that.

JM: The record for three-pointers in a women’s NCAA tournament game is nine, held by three players. One is Caitlin Clark.

She started 0/5 from deep, but finished 8/15. Her eighth three gave @KStateWBB the 80-79 lead and win in OT

JM: Funny, because as I watched the game, I kept saying “get it to Poindexter!” Just like her teammates were.

USC's JuJu Watkins carried off with injury in NCAA tournament 2nd round – ESPN

It seems the Cinderella run of USC has hit a snag! π© Hope for a speedy recovery for JuJu and the rest of the team π. https://t.co/SvQScMYuyb
JM: Watkins, USC’s star player, suffered a season-ending injury against Mississippi State and will not play the rest of the tournament. This is a huge blow for USC, as Watkins was already named player of the year by The Athletic and The Sporting News and was named a first-team All-American player by the Associated Press. She averaged 23.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season and led the Trojans in three-pointers, steals, scoring, and minutes played. K-State has a shot to pull the upset, but it still won’t be easy, even without Watkins. Tune in Saturday at 7:00 on ESPN to find out what happens.
