K-State Great Jim Colbert Dies At Age 85

K-State football alumnus and golf great Jim Colbert died Sunday at the age of 85. Colbert is a retired American professional golfer known for his impressive achievements on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Born on March 9, 1941, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Colbert turned professional in 1965 and quickly made a name for himself on the golf circuit.

Throughout his career, Colbert earned a total of eight PGA Tour victories, with his first significant win at the 1974 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am. He was particularly noted for his consistent play and ability to perform under pressure, making him a formidable competitor during the era. Colbert’s skill set included a powerful swing and an impressive short game, which contributed to his success on various courses.

In addition to his PGA Tour victories, Colbert also found success on the Champions Tour after turning 50. He claimed several titles, showcasing his longevity in the sport and continued dedication to the game. Colbert’s influence extended beyond just his wins; he was known for his sportsmanship and professionalism, earning the respect of peers and fans alike.

After retiring, Colbert remained involved in golf, offering insights and mentorship to younger players. His legacy is marked not only by his tournament victories but also by his contributions to the sport and the positive impact he had on the golfing community. He is the founder and namesake of the Colbert Hills golf course in Manhattan.

I received some free tickets to a senior PGA event at Tiffany Greens in Kansas City in the late 90’s and got to see Jim golf in person. He was a contender in that tournament, like he was in so many others. He was also best friends with Bill Snyder and bled purple as so many of us do.

Kevin Kietzman did a very nice tribute podcast to Jim and also had former Kansas City sportscaster Jack Harry on as a guest to tell some great Jim Colbert stories. I think it’s worth the listen….
