Football is finally here!  K-State opens the 2020 season this Saturday against Arkansas State in Manhattan at 11:00 AM on Fox.  Here are ten fun facts about our first opponent Arkansas State…

1)  Arkansas State is an FBS school and plays in the west division of the Sun Belt Conference.  In 2019 they finished second in the west division with a 5-3 conference record and finished 8-5 overall to become bowl eligible.

2)  Arkansas State beat FIU 34-26 in the Camellia Bowl on December 21, 2019 on ESPN.

3)  The first bowl game Arkansas State played in was the 1951 Refrigerator Bowl on December 2nd in Evansville, Indiana.  They beat Camp Breckinridge 46-12.  This is from their media guide..

4)  The name of Arkansas State’s mascot is Howl.  He looks like this…

5)  Until January 2008, the Arkansas State mascot was The Indians, at which time it was changed to the Red Wolves.  Here’s a pic of the old mascot…

 
6)  Arkansas State is located in Jonesboro, Arkansas and has an enrollment of approximately 14,000 on the Jonesboro campus.

7)  Arkansas State is also known as “A-State” for short.  That means we have A-State vs. K-State this weekend.

8)  Arkansas State first fielded a football team in 1911.

9)  In 1975, the team’s first year at the Division I level, Arkansas State recorded an 11–0 season as one of only two undefeated Division I teams. As a member of the Southland Conference, Arkansas State did not receive an automatic bowl game bid and was not selected for post-season play. The Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, was created as a direct result of the snub.  The 1982 Independence Bowl was K-State’s first ever bowl game.

10)  Arkansas State won the Sun Belt Conference three straight years from 2011-2013.
