It’s Super Bowl week!  The Kansas City Chiefs, led by ex-Texas Tech great Patrick Mahomes, are trying to win back-to-back championships by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV on Sunday.  I decided to write a Super Bowl-themed piece this week with a Big 12 conference tie-in. I looked back at past Super Bowls to analyze the impact that players from Big 12 schools have had on the NFL’s biggest game.  As I got further into my research, I thought it would be fun to rank each Big 12 school by how many points were scored by their alumni in Super Bowl games.

Looking up the Super Bowl box scores, recalling some of these names, and learning some new names was really enjoyable for me.  The first Super Bowl I remember watching was Super Bowl XVI.  I was eight years old at the time but still remember the 49ers beating the Bengals and becoming a huge Joe Montana fan after that.  This exercise was quite a trip down memory lane for me.  I hope seeing some of these names brings back some memories for you as well.

The NFL doesn’t count a touchdown pass as a score for the quarterback, which means the running back or receiver is the only one that gets credit for the score.  Touchdown passes aren’t included in the totals below, but I’ve saved some space at the end of the article to discuss the four quarterbacks from Big 12 schools that have played in the Super Bowl.  I used the box scores at Pro Football Reference as a guide for these rankings. Without further ado, here are the Super Bowl point totals and rankings of all the Big 12 schools.

10) TCU:  Zero points

TCU is the only school in the Big 12 that has not had a player go on to score in a Super Bowl.

Texas Tech gets bragging rights!  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there have been four quarterbacks from Big 12 schools play in the Super Bowl.  Steve Grogan from Kansas State relieved New England Patriots starter Tony Eason in Super Bowl XX and passed for a touchdown in a 46-10 loss to the Chicago Bears.  Jeff Hostetler from West Virginia started for the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV and had one touchdown pass in a 20-19 victory against the Bills.   Troy Aikman played his first two years in college at Oklahoma before transferring to UCLA.  He had four touchdown passes in Super Bowl 27 in a 52-17 victory against the Buffalo Bills.  And finally, Patrick Mahomes had two touchdown passes last year in Super Bowl 54 helping the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.

Do you think anyone will ever break Thurman Thomas’ record of scoring a touchdown in four straight Super Bowls?  Maybe Mahomes can do it.  It will be fun to watch him try.  Go Chiefs and go Big 12!
