From The Couch – K-State Basketball Rises To Fifth In AP Poll

K-State rose to number five in the AP basketball poll that was released today. The last time K-State was ranked in the top five was prior to the 2010-11 season when they were ranked number three coming off an Elite 8 appearance the prior season. That season ended with a second round loss to Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament.

Here’s some more K-State basketball odds and ends…

JM: This marks the third time this season that Johnson has won the newcomer of the week award. He continues his impressive play.

JM: It appears that Jerome Tang has been successful in ending “the chant.” For now. Speaking of Tang, he was seen jumping into the student section to do the Wabash Cannonball with the students after the 68-58 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday….

JM: Seven games into the conference season K-State is in sole possession of first place in the Big 12. Can they hold onto it? It’s gonna be tough. The Wildcats travel to 12th ranked Iowa State tomorrow night, then have a game against Florida on Saturday, followed by a trip to 9th ranked Kansas, a game against 10th ranked Texas at home, and another tough game against 11th ranked TCU at home. If they can sweep the teams on that schedule, holding onto first place and keeping that position to the end of the season looks like a really good possibility. I think it is unlikely, but stranger things have happened. I’d take 2-2 or 3-1 in those four very tough conference games.

In other news, some outlets are calling K-State Final Four contenders…

JM: Can K-State make the Final Four in Jerome Tang’s first season? It just might happen, and I can’t believe I’m saying it.

Tune in tomorrow at 8:00 on ESPNU to see K-State take on Iowa State in Ames.
