From The Couch – From The Couch – Led By Cooper Beebe And The Offensive Line, K-State Dominates Houston

It’s time for some love for K-State’s offensive line. K-State dominated the Houston Cougars on Saturday 41 to nothing. K-State’s defense played great shutting out the Cougars, Will Howard was spectacular, Avery Johnson threw his first touchdown pass as a Wildcat, DJ Giddens had 96 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Treshaun Ward added 32 yards and a touchdown. But the story was the offensive line, specifically All-American guard Cooper Beebe and his block of Houson defensive back Juwon Gaston on DJ Giddens’ nine-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. It might be the best block you will see this season. The video of the play went viral on social media after the game.

So I’m doing something a little different this week. This is an offensive line appreciation post. Enjoy.

“There’s a reason why Beebs (Cooper Beebe) is getting the accolades he is as one of the best interior linemen in the country. He brings it every week and it’s not just once in a while. He plays hard, plays physical. Really our communication in the offensive line is getting better and better.”…Head coach Chris Klieman, post-game

JM: K-State rushed for 179 yards on the day, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. It may not seem like a lot, but Houston knew K-State was going to run it, especially after getting a big lead, and still couldn’t stop it.

JM: I’ve watched Beebe’s block on DJ Giddens’ second quarter touchdown run an unhealthy number of times. I chuckle every time I watch it. Here’s another angle….

JM: Beebe is getting national accolades for this block, like this comment from Mike Golic, Jr…..

JM: “Destroyer of Worlds” HAS to be his new nickname, correct?

JM: Or maybe “Nacho Libre, Destroyer of Worlds.”

“Beebs (Cooper Beebe) is a mean, nasty guy in there.”…Chris Klieman, post-game

JM: This was meant as the highest compliment Klieman could make about Cooper Beebe.

Let’s not forget about the rest of the offensive line group. They have been playing fantastic football. After Saturday’s games, K-State has the fifth best rushing offense in the country. I’ve been giving a lot of props to the position players like Will Howard, Avery Johnson, DJ Giddens, Treshaun Ward and others, but it’s time the offensive line gets some credit. The offense isn’t successful if the offensive line isn’t playing well. They’re playing spectacular football right now.

“[I] didn’t even mention it…”…Chris Klieman, post-game

JM: Klieman was asked in post-game about becoming bowl eligible. He didn’t even mention it to the team, because that’s not the goal. Isn’t it nice that becoming bowl eligible is no big deal and just expected?

“All I talked about all week was starting fast. We talked about it, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and today. We started practice with things that would get them going quick. Our guys in the hotel were awesome. We traveled good and were good in the hotel, had energy pregame, and then we kick it off and were getting beat everywhere.”…Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen, post-game

JM: As I watched the game, I kept thinking “why is Houston in the Big 12?” It was like watching K-State play against a bad FCS team.

“Can’t say enough about our defense, coach [Joe] Klanderman and the staff’s great plan. We’re playing really well at all three levels of defense right now, which I’m excited about.”…Chris Klieman, post-game

JM: Injuries could have decimated this defense, but they have continued to play well and improve. Houston had not been shutout in a game since the year 2000. What a spectacular performance.

The game of the year is next week against Texas in Austin. The winner will likely have the inside track to earn a spot in the Big 12 championship game. The loser will need some help from other teams to get there. The game is at 11:00 AM and will be broadcast on Fox. It is going to be a long week waiting in anticipation of this one. Stay tuned for more analysis as the week goes on.

  1. Joe haven’t commented much this year cause lm not a football Savy individual but! What l saw Saturday was a game of almost near perfection from what l think KSU is all about! Klanderman deserves a raise! No T.D. for 9 Quarters exceptional! If this team is this perfect in Austin and remembers where the Governors cup belong here in M H and watches out for the trick game here in Farmagehddon we will be a repeat for big 12
