K-State Sports Rapid Fire – December 4, 2024

A lot is going on in the world of K-State sports, so let’s do another edition of Rapid Fire. Let’s GO!

-Football fall signing day is today and K-State landed 26 commitments. The class ranks 35th in the country and third in the Big 12 according to 247Sports. Interestingly, the Wildcats’ average recruiting ranking in the Big 12 over the last four years is 8th. They finished 8th in the Big 12 this season.

-Highly rated tight end Lincoln Cure decided to keep his commitment to K-State after a flirtation with the Oregon Ducks. That’s a good sign. Oregon is currently the number one team in the country and I’m sure they threw a bunch of NIL money at Cure but the Goodland native decided to stay in Kansas.

-K-State awaits its bowl game destination. With the 12-team playoff system this year, bowl games matter even less than they used to. With all the opt-outs and transfers, most bowl games are glorified scrimmages anyway.

-Speaking of the college football playoff, it’s turning into a joke already. When I looked at the preseason top 25 poll, I could tell that it was being set up to get a lot of Big 10 and SEC teams in. The top teams in those conferences beat up on each other and don’t drop in the rankings. Big 12 teams do the same thing, but the top teams in the Big 12 drop quite a bit after a loss. It’s not very fair.

-It looks like Alabama will get into the field with three losses, while there appear to be plenty of other worthy teams with two losses that will be left out. And the Big 12 is only getting one team in? That’s a joke.

-Ayoka Lee became the all-time leading scorer in K-State women’s basketball history on Tuesday night. She passed Kenra Wecker, who held the record for 19 years. Lee also ranks 10th on the all-time scoring list in the Big 12. She needs 198 points to move into the top 5. With 22 games left in the regular season, she’ll only have to average nine points a game to get there.

-The Lady Wildcats are 8-1 on the season. Their only loss was to number 8 Duke. K-State is currently ranked number 13 in the AP poll.

-The K-State Men’s basketball team set a program record for points scored in a game with 120 against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Sunday. To say Arkansas Pine Bluff hasn’t been coached to play defense would be a massive understatement. The Wildcats won 120-73. But congratulations to the 2024 Wildcats for getting the record, I guess.

-How does playing a team like Arkansas Pine Bluff get the Wildcats ready for the grueling Big 12 schedule they’re about to play? It doesn’t.

-K-State’s remaining non-conference schedule isn’t easy. They play at St. John’s on Saturday, Drake at the T-Mobile Center on December 17th, and then at Wichita State on December 21st. The Wildcats could go into conference play with a 6-5 record, but win all three and they would be looking pretty good at 9-2. This stretch of games will tell me a lot about this team’s ability to compete in the Big 12.

-K-State doesn’t play again at home until December 30th. They’ll go 29 days without a home game. Yikes.
-Just a hunch, but I think Arizona State wins the Big 12 on Saturday against Iowa State. But it will be close.
